As the first task of the Time 3 and Time 4 questionnaire on Self
and Personality, subjects were asked to describe spontaneously what
they like and what they dislike about their age. These spontaneous
statements were assessed using an open "I especially like about my
age.../I dislike about my age..." sentence as shown in the instructions.
Subjects responses were tape recorded and transcribed verbatim. These
transcriptions were subsequently content analyzed and rated. The
unsegmented responses were coded as entire protocols in terms of
domains (e.g., personal characteristics,
health, etc.). This coding is not identical to the domain-coding of
the answers in the 'Who am I'- and the 'Possible Selves'-Tasks.
Further dimensions coded were reference to
loss or gain as well as valence. Coding was done by two different
coders, independently of each other.
|
For example: Are there things you like about your age? What do you like about your age? Please give two examples: I will write the sentences for you. I especially like about my age...........................? I will write the sentences for you.
You have just described what you specially appreciate about your age. But every point in life also has difficult sides. There are always things that people don't appreciate about their age. What do you think? For example: Are there things you don't like about your age? What do you not like about your age? Please give two examples: I don't like about my age...........................? Again, I will write the sentences for you. |
Domains consisted of the following:
1. Everyday routine
2. Everyday competence
3. Personal characteristics
4. Health
5. Family and social relationships
6. Leisure
7. Existential concerns
Under the dimension of valence, the content was coded in terms of age-satisfaction or age-dissatisfaction. Valence was rated on a five-point-scale (very negative, negative, balanced, positive, very positive), first for the answers to both questions taken together. In a second step, the answers to each task were rated separately.
B. Loss and Gain
Three variables were used to code whether each statement referred to something that had been gained, something that had been lost, or something that had been stayed the same. The coding was: 0 = neither loss or gain had occurred, 1 = the gain or loss was positive and -1 = the gain or loss was negative.
